White Mountain in the Inyo National Forest

White Mountain Peak is the 3rd highest peak in California at 14,256 ft, only lower than Mt. Whitney and Mt. Williamson. The trail starts at the lock gate at 11,630 ft, where most people park or camp to start this trek. This trail, all the way to the top, is an old Navy built road. The trail/road is completely above tree level and is exposed and often quit windy. The summit commands a spectacular view especially to the west, where the Sierra Nevada Mountains rise from across the Owens Valley.

Remember to bring plenty of water and sun screen. Weather can change quickly, so be prepared. You might consider camping at a lower campground in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest that is on the approach to the trail head. The camping at the locked gate has no facilities.

Enjoy these photographs of the trip to White Mountain.
